Caution To anyone contemplating purchasing a metal building.

My experience; On July 27 2007, I ordered a 26 x 24 fully enclosed metal building from West Coast Metal Buildings, Inc. 5073 Dallas Hwy, Salem, OR. The work crew arrived in a timely manner on Aug.7th. I had a 24 x 26 concrete slab pored and ready.

On the completion of erecting the structure; The east and west walls extended to the full length of the concrete pad. The north wall is 7” from the edge of the concrete on both E & W ends. The south wall is 6 1/8” on the East side end and 5 1/4” on the west side.

On the East and West walls, they cut off the siding at the concrete NOT leaving it to lap over the slab. The North and South walls do not extending to the slab edge allowed rain in under the metal frame. The complete building and its metal frame was placed directly on concrete, with out any foam barrier.

If anyone thinking about insulating the building and installing enterer walls; NONE of the stud/legs have any uniform spacing. Between legs on east wall, (South to North) 48 7/8”, 50 1/8’, 49 7/8”, 49 7/8”, 50 3/8”, and 48 7/8”. One leg was eliminated from having 48” centers for siding.

The West wall does not align with the East wall. The spacing of the West wall is; 48 7/8”, 50 1/8”, 49 7/8”, 49 7/8”, 50 3/8”, 48 7/8”. One leg is 2 3/8” off alignment from the opposite wall and one is 2 5/8” out of alignment.

The south wall with a rollup door has a 6’ 11” span without bracing. I can stand next to every wall and see daylight in every corner.

The North wall spacing between legs are; 72 ½”, 50”, 48”, 48 ½” and 69 ½”. Hanging an enterer wall?

Over the complete building, there are screws that have (blown-out) torqued to tight Rubber/Neopreme weather seals, allowing moisture in.

A complaint was filed, and as of Sept 5, there had been no contact from West Coast Metal Buildings, Inc.

The building structure is sound but the design features and construction is unacceptable.
On July 26th, 2007 I ordered a metal building from K & D Auto Hillsboro, OR. Mfg by West Coast Metal Buildings, Inc. Salem, OR. The order was for a 24’ x 26’ building to be placed on a 24’ x 26’ concrete slab. The leg height were to be 10’, with a 10’ x 10’ roll up garage door and a mobile home door. Sides and ends to be enclosed. I was informed by K & D Auto Delivery of building approximately 6 weeks.

July 27th at 0900, called concrete contractor for 24’ x 26’concrete slab. Arrived for job on 7-30-07

Approximately 31 July West Coast Metal Buildings called and said building to be delivered on Sept. 8th, ( they arrived on Sept. 7th at about 0830 completed by noon on the 8th).

July 31 st at 4:54 called W.C.M. B. and talked to Amber. Discussed placement of doors, measurements, size. Amber stated that by placing the rollup door on the South end would require additional bracing and cost more. I said ok to extra cost. There is no bracing.
at 4:56 faxed diagram of slab layout for building on property to Amber at W.C.M.B. to be assured that I was getting the layout that I wanted.
at 5:54 faxed Amber and asked for drawing of building and roof line. Amber called and said that I did not need it.

Sept 3rd brother arrived to assist in completing interior of garage. He identified numerous deficiencies and noted them.

On Sept 6, mailed information letter to West Coast Metal Buildings listing deficiencies

On Sep 10th at 10:16 faxed W.C.M.B. about an additional major deficiency if correctly identified. (South wall has no concrete anchors.)

I believe I am entitled for West Coast Metal Buildings to install legs at all four corners of the slab. Remove the skin and legs on the north wall and move about 6 in. to the edge of the concrete slab.
The south wall and rollup door needs to be moved to the edge of the concrete slab and anchored. North and south walls need bracing for the 6ft, plus spacing of legs. As shown in photos 4 & 5 of display models.
The roof needs to be extended approximately 6 in. on each end to allow rain run off. This shown in photos 1, 2 & 3 of the display models.
The skin needs to be extended to lap at least 1” over slab around the complete building.

On September 4th, 2007 I inspected the metal garage erected by West Coast Metal Buildings. I found numerous features, that I do not believe are of acceptable standards for any building.

On September 6, 2007 I listed them in a letter and sent a copy to West Coast Metal buildings.

On September 11, 2007 Received a call from Anita, that she was the company representative to help satisfy the customer in receiving satisfaction in the building. She asked what she could do. She mentioned several times; she wanted to know what it would take to satisfy the purchaser of the building. She said she did not understand the letter. I informed her that the construction of the building did not cover the slab and rain had entered. On the East and West walls the Siding did not extend past the slab. She said that cast extra. I informed her they it was cheaper for them to cut it off, that leave it. She did not respond.

I kept hearing a beeping sound and asked Anita if she was taping the conversation. She stated that she was not. I checked the battery meter on the cell phone and it was up. I heard the beeping through out the conversation.

I mentioned that the building did not follow the pattern of any of the seven display models at K & D Auto. She said they were not West Coast Metal Building displays, They were custom models and not their samples. She stated that they did not make garages. There were actually only five samples for comparing leg spacing, roof and walls. Enclosed are photos of a model of one building that has corner walls meeting and the roof has an over hang. One photo is of a sign on one of their buildings for a garage. Also there are photos of interior bracing. One would assume that this display represents their construction methods.

She asked that I take some photos of the questionable areas and get them e-mailed to her that day and she would see about having a repairman out the next day to take care of them. Not having the experience of e-mailing photos or attachments, it was after normal working hours before they were sent. Copies of photos are enclosed.

On September 12, 2007, received a call from Anita commenting on all the photos. She wanted to go through them one at a time to identify what each one represented. She appeared to be very critical of the issue of the photos of the spacing of the legs/studs. I stated all building that I new of had studs with 16” centers or 48” centers for plywood for interior walls. She stated that they did not build for garages with interior walls.

I mentioned the South wall did not appear to have anchor bolts. She cut me off and insisted we discuss the leg spacing. I asked about the North and South walls that did not extend to the corners to meet the East and West walls. Anita informed me that to have the No. and So. walls to extend to cover the slab of 24’ x 26’, I would have had to pay approximately $500.00 more and that was not in the order.

In discussing the “On Center” spacing, she asked if I was measuring from the center of each leg. I informed her that I was measuring from the right side of one leg to the right leg of the next leg. She was insistent that I could only figure the center, by measuring on the center of each leg. After the third time telling her they were the same and she insisted that you could only use center to center. I told her that she did not know what she was doing and should not be trying to do that job. She accused me of attacking her. I informed her that I was and she was incompetent in the job she was trying to perform in telling me how the measure legs/studs. At that point, she disconnected the phone.
